Youth ministry at Rumson Presbyterian Church is an important part of the life of our church, and we work hard to integrate the youth into the worship, service, and life of our congregation. Our youth are gifts from God, and as we teach them, they also teach us much about the grace of God. Our youth program teaches our youth a Christian faith that is integrated with all aspects of their lives and that is critically engaged in the world they live in and will someday come to lead.

Our youth ministry program is led by the Pastor, as well as by an inter-generational team of volunteer adult leaders from the congregation that serve as youth leaders, confirmation teachers and mentors, and others who help us with a variety of activities. Oversight for our youth ministry program is provided through the Sessionís nurture commission.

Youth group is the foundation of our youth program. Youth group meets a few times each month, Senior High youth group is for youth in grades 9-12 and Junior High youth group is for youth in grades 6-8. Youth group activities are varied, they can be anything from a Bible study, to a trip, to working together on a short- term mission project, to a meeting at someoneís home, or just going out to get something to eat together. From time-to-time there is a cost associated with a youth group activity.

Confirmation is a time when our youth publicly affirm the faith their parents chose for them at baptism, and is done only after much study and preparation. We teach confirmation class on Sunday afternoons at the church from the beginning of October through Pentecost Sunday (usually towards the end of May) when the youth are confirmed during the regular worship service on that Sunday. The class is taught by Rev. John Monroe and another adult teacher. Assisting in the teaching of confirmation are mentors; adults in the church who work one-on-one with the youth during the year.

At Rumson Presbyterian Church we realize that our youth continue to need mentoring and support after the high school years, but especially during college. Our youth stay in contact with the college-aged young adults through finals care packages, and we keep in touch with our college young adults through email, occasional mailings, and holiday activities. When our youth leave to go to college, they receive a graduate gift from the church, usually a devotional book to use during their first year of college. We also work to keep our young adults appraised of the various opportunities for service and learning that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) extends to them during college and after.

We support the parents of our congregation who work hard to love, guide, and support their children through adolescence and into early adulthood. Our parents meet a few times a year together with the Pastor to plan and evaluate youth programs at the church and also serve as important volunteers for our youth programs. We couldnít do it without them! We also work with parents of older high school youth as they plan to send their children to college, making available to them financial aid information through the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as well as information about Presbyterian-related colleges and universities.
